Description

Strong spread with light secondary hubbing under the lower right side of the volcano distinguishes this ninth doubled die reverse for the 2005 State Quarter series. VarietyVista cataloged this variety with die markers UVC-1759 and DMR-011, tracking three die stages: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B with reverse and obverse at early-to-mid die state, and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The volcano depicted on this quarter's reverse is from the Hawaii state quarter, whose design features the volcanic profile of Diamond Head crater and King Kamehameha I. The 50 State Quarters Program (1999-2008) generated enormous collector interest and close examination by variety specialists, resulting in extensive doubled die catalogs for each state's design. Doubled die reverses occur when the hub and die fail to align precisely during successive impressions in the die-sinking process, embedding overlapping design elements into the working die that then transfer to every coin struck. The volcanic terrain on the Hawaii reverse provided sculptural topography where even light hub displacement created visible doubling, particularly along sloped surfaces where the spread direction contrasts with the design's natural contours.
