Description

DDO-003 on the 2005 (P) Minnesota State Quarter shows a light spread as an extra earlobe on the Washington obverse. Die markers: UVC-1850 and DMR-094. Stage A shows a die gouge above the second R of QUARTER and a large die gouge below the left wheat stem on the reverse — placed in early-to-mid die state (EMDS). Stage B not confirmed. I-code marker: I-2 extra earlobe. Doubling class is Class IV Offset Hub Doubling. VarietyVista cross-reference: DDO-003. The 2005 Minnesota quarter reverse features a shoreline scene with two figures fishing against a lake backdrop with a loon and the state outline. Minnesota quarters of this year are particularly well known among doubled-die collectors for the famous "extra tree" reverse varieties (DDR), which are among the most widely publicized State Quarter errors; the less celebrated obverse DDO-003 offers a complementary variety for collectors assembling a complete set of 2005 Minnesota attribution types. Washington quarters of 2005 were struck in copper-nickel clad. The extra earlobe is a subtle but catalogued diagnostic for this obverse die.
