2005-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-009
Error
Description
Ninth in the reverse doubled die census for the 2005-D Hawaii State Quarter, DDR-009 presents very light spread under the lower right side of the volcano on Don Everhart II's reverse design depicting King Kamehameha I extending his hand above the Hawaiian Islands. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-1678 and DMR-011, documenting three die stages: Stage A with both reverse and obverse at early die state (EDS), Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The comments note "SMS" and "Can be found in Mint Sets," indicating this variety appears on Satin Finish specimens produced for the 2005 uncirculated mint sets — the special matte finish that replaced standard business strike quality in mint sets from 2005 through 2010. Denver struck its allotment of 2005 Hawaii quarters as the final state in the program's seven-year annual rotation for that year. The very light spread classification indicates the doubling requires careful examination to confirm — the secondary hub impression sits extremely close to the primary, producing only marginal thickening of the volcanic terrain contours beneath the lower right side of the erupting peak. Hawaii's Mount Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanic features on this quarter design provide topographic detail where even very subtle hub displacement can be detected against the irregular landscape contours. Satin Finish specimens offer a distinctive matte surface texture that can sometimes make subtle doubling easier to detect than on brilliant surfaces, as the diffused reflectivity reduces glare interference. Collectors should examine the lower right volcanic area under 20x magnification with angled lighting, comparing against confirmed normal specimens to identify the very light secondary displacement.
