Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2005-D 25¢ SF OR WDDR-001, this doubled die reverse variety appears on a 2005-D Oregon State Quarter struck at the Denver Mint. The Oregon quarter, featuring Crater Lake National Park's Wizard Island, was the 33rd issue in the 50 State Quarters program that ran from 1999 through 2008. Struck in the copper-nickel clad composition weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter and a reeded edge, this coin is part of one of the most popular and widely collected United States Mint programs in history. The doubling on WDDR-001 shows on the underside of the right end of Wizard Island, the volcanic cinder cone that rises from the surface of Crater Lake in the quarter's reverse design by Donna Weaver. Obverse die markers include a die gouge above the right side of the W in WE and another above and between the U and S of TRUST. Reverse die markers are substantial: die gouges appear above some of the small trees near the center of the bottom shoreline, and die scratches run from west-northwest to east-southeast above the trees near the left end of the lower shoreline. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-VIII, this variety is classified as Class VIII (tilted hub) doubling, where the hub was tilted during the hubbing process, creating displacement that varies across the die face based on each element's position relative to the tilt axis. The State Quarters program generated enormous public interest in coin collecting, and varieties on State Quarters are particularly popular because they combine the broad appeal of the 50-state program with the specialized interest of error and variety collectors. Oregon's Crater Lake design, with its detailed landscape of water, island, rim, and trees, provides multiple diagnostic points where hub doubling can be detected and cataloged.
