2005-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005

Description

Documenting a medium spread in the lower right side of the volcano on the 2005-D State Quarter for Minnesota (which actually depicts Hawaii's Kilauea volcano — the Minnesota quarter features a lake and pine trees; this is the Hawaii quarter), DDR-005 captures hub doubling on one of the more geologically detailed State Quarter reverse designs. VarietyVista assigned die identifiers UVC-1666 and DMR-007, tracking three die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces exhibit early die state, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The EDS confirmation for Stage A verifies that specimens with fresh, unworn die surfaces have been documented. The comments note "SMS" and indicate this variety can be found in Mint Sets — the satin finish specimens included in 2005 uncirculated sets that received a distinctive matte-like surface treatment different from both standard business strikes and proof issues. Denver's 2005 quarter production generated enormous quantities across the five state designs issued that year, and the satin finish Mint Set specimens provide a separate production channel where this variety may be found. Medium spread in the lower right side of the volcano indicates the hub displacement created a secondary impression shifted from the primary in the detailed topographic area where lava flows, rock formations, and elevation contours provide fine design elements against which doubling is detectable. Collectors searching Mint Set examples should examine the lower right quadrant of the volcano under 10-15x magnification, where the medium spread produces a displaced secondary outline of the terrain features. The satin finish surface, while different from proof mirrors, still provides good contrast for detecting hub doubling compared to the somewhat rougher surfaces of standard business strikes from circulation.
