The 2003 State Washington Quarter is a United States quarter from the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. In 2003, the Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco Mints struck 2,303,071,355 quarters of the five designs, including 17,042,580 clad proofs and 5,628,775 silver proofs. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. The 2003 quarters honored, in release order, Illinois, Alabama, Maine, Missouri, and Arkansas. Some state designs attracted controversy over their selections. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Across its variants, estimated values range from $0 to $25 depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $5.6K in MS64 grade at Heritage Auctions. Designed by John Flanagan (obverse, modified by William Cousins in 1999) / various state-specific reverse designers.
