The 1999 State Washington Quarter is a United States quarter from the State Quarters 1999-2008 series — the first year of the series. In 1999, the Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco Mints struck 4,453,529,620 quarters of the five designs, including 18,566,795 clad proofs and 4,022,825 silver proofs. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. The program's first five quarters, issued in 1999, honored in release order Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. The program instantly became the most successful numismatic initiative in U.S. history. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Across its variants, estimated values range from $0 to $45 depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $17K in PR70 grade at Heritage Auctions.
