Description

The 2003 (P) Alabama State Quarter is a quarter from the Philadelphia Mint, belonging to the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 225,000,000 Alabama quarters dated 2003. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. The reverse features Helen Keller seated reading a book in Braille, with her name written in both English and Braille, and the inscription "Spirit of Courage." This is the first U.S. circulating coin to feature Braille. The 2003 quarters honored, in release order, Illinois, Alabama, Maine, Missouri, and Arkansas. Some state designs attracted controversy over their selections. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $2 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #14016.
