Description

The 2003 (D) Illinois State Quarter represents a Denver Mint issue from the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The Denver Mint struck 237,400,000 Illinois quarters dated 2003. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. The reverse depicts a young Abraham Lincoln within the state outline, flanked by a farm scene and the Chicago skyline, with the inscriptions "21st State/Century" and "Land of Lincoln." The design bridges Illinois's agricultural roots with its urban achievement. The 2003 quarters honored, in release order, Illinois, Alabama, Maine, Missouri, and Arkansas. Some state designs attracted controversy over their selections. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $2 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #14015.
