Description

The 2003 (P) Illinois State Quarter is a quarter produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The U.S. Mint produced 225.8 million examples, making this ranked 4th of 10 mint variants by mintage, with 10% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order of statehood ratification. The reverse depicts a young Abraham Lincoln within the state outline, flanked by a farm scene and the Chicago skyline, with the inscriptions "21st State/Century" and "Land of Lincoln." The design bridges Illinois's agricultural roots with its urban achievement. Illinois, Alabama, Maine, Missouri, and Arkansas. Some state designs attracted controversy over their selections.
