Description

The 2003 (S) Proof Illinois State Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The U.S. Mint produced 3.4 million examples, making this ranked 6th of 20 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order of statehood ratification. The reverse depicts a young Abraham Lincoln within the state outline, flanked by a farm scene and the Chicago skyline, with the inscriptions "21st State/Century" and "Land of Lincoln." The design bridges Illinois's agricultural roots with its urban achievement. Illinois, Alabama, Maine, Missouri, and Arkansas. Some state designs attracted controversy over their selections. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors.
