2003 (P) Missouri State Quarter - P(MO)-25DEO-001 Trail Die Obverse

Description

2003P(MO)-25DEO-001 is the obverse die of a 2003 Philadelphia quarter with the Missouri reverse. Its code has no letter after the file number; the parts are the date and P mint, the MO state tag, 25 for the quarter, DEO for a design extension on the obverse and file 001. Light lines climb off the upper ends of the motto's letters and from the mint mark, and the text puts them at 010°, a little east of north. On the middle-die-state coin, a small dent marks the field below ME in AMERICA, and on the reverse a crack leaves the bow of the canoe. Albert Neils found the die. As usually explained, the lines come from a polishing wheel run across the die, though some attribute them to die-to-hub movement.
