Description

Discovered by Christopher Knight and cataloged as ADC-10c-2001P-03, this 2001 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime presents an atypical clashed die variety that stands apart from conventional die clashes. What makes this specimen notable is the unusual strength and amount of clash marks from the torch — a reverse design element — transferring across the center of Roosevelt's face on the obverse, a far more dramatic transfer than typically seen. Corresponding marks from Roosevelt's hair appear on the reverse, confirming the bilateral nature of the clash. This variety is similar to dies 01 and 02 in the ADC-10c-2001 series but distinctly stronger, with torch impressions more deeply incised across the portrait. An atypical die clash differs from a standard clash in that transferred impressions appear in unexpected locations or with unusual intensity, suggesting the dies met at an abnormal angle or with greater force. The Roosevelt Dime, designed by John R. Sinnock and in continuous production since 1946, generates clash varieties regularly, but the intensity of torch marks across Roosevelt's face makes this one of the more visually striking examples.
