Description

Second spiked head documented for the 2001 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime, this variety was identified during the early 21st century — a period when Roosevelt Dime die variety research was gaining momentum alongside the well-established Lincoln Cent variety community. The spiked head forms when a crack opens in the obverse die and runs from the rim into Roosevelt's bust; metal filling the crack during striking creates a raised spike on Roosevelt's portrait. The 2001-P dime was struck in the year that also saw the introduction of the Sacagawea Dollar and the continuation of the 50 State Quarters program, a period of intense numismatic activity at the Philadelphia Mint with multiple denominations competing for press time and die production resources. Two spiked heads documented for 2001-P reflects the early stage of systematic dime spiked head research — later dates would be searched more thoroughly as awareness of these varieties grew. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins and documented May 10, 2016, SKH-10c-2001P-02 shows that Roosevelt Dime obverse dies were cracking into the bust through the turn of the millennium.
