2001D-1DER-007T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Michael Pope of Illinois, the 2001D-1DER-007T is a trail die reverse variety found on Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cents. Trail die varieties result from vestiges of a previous hub impression remaining on the working die, creating faint secondary design traces on struck coins. Documented at Stage B with the obverse at mid-die-state, the primary obverse marker is a die gouge to the left of the word IN. The reverse, also at MDS, carries a light die scratch in the bottom of bay 4 of the Memorial building. The mid-die-state condition on both sides indicates this die pair was in an intermediate phase of its production life, where die markers are typically well-developed but not yet obscured by the heavy deterioration seen at later stages. Collectors examining 2001-D Memorial Cents should look first for the obverse gouge near IN, then confirm the variety by locating the light bay 4 die scratch on the reverse, which requires careful examination under magnification.
