Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 2001-D Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse shows doubling on the central right side of the 6th column to the left of the Lincoln statue — a specific architectural location within Frank Gasparro's Memorial building that provides precise attribution coordinates. The column doubling indicates hub displacement during die preparation that was detectable on the fine columnar details of the Memorial's colonnade, where vertical elements amplify the visual effect of horizontal hub shifts. Die markers include a die gouge near the top of the last Memorial bay on the reverse and a small die gouge (dot) to the right of the bottom of the last column. No obverse markers are noted. As WDDR-002, this is the second cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2001-D Denver Mint cent, following WDDR-001 in the sequential numbering. No cross-references to other attribution systems are currently known. The 2001-D Lincoln Memorial Cent represents the late era of a design that had been in continuous production since 1959, and the forty-two years of accumulated production experience meant that die preparation techniques were highly refined — making the hub doubling events that produced DDR varieties notable exceptions to generally consistent die quality. The Memorial's columns serve as particularly sensitive indicators of hub doubling because their narrow, vertical geometry makes even slight horizontal displacement visible as a thickening, shadow, or secondary contour line along the column shaft. Two DDRs for the 2001-D date documents multiple hub doubling events across the dies prepared for Denver Mint cent production that year, with each variety occurring on a unique working die.
