2001D-1DER-006T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Jeremy Gardner, the 2001D-1DER-006T trail die reverse on the Denver Lincoln Memorial Cent documents trail lines created during the reverse die's hubbing process. Die markers at Stage C identify late die state on both sides: the obverse shows a die gouge in front of Lincoln's nose, and the reverse carries a scratch in bay 5 of the Memorial building. The late die state designation indicates this die had been in service for a substantial portion of its working life when the documented specimens were struck, meaning the trail lines had been present from manufacture while the die accumulated the gouge and scratch through extended use. Trail die varieties are distinguished from doubled dies by their formation mechanism — lateral shift during a single hubbing stroke rather than a distinct second impression — and they produce characteristically thinner, more linear displacement effects. Gardner's discovery contributed to the ongoing census of trail die varieties across the Lincoln Memorial Cent series, which has proven to be one of the most productive areas for trail die documentation among all United States coin denominations.
