2001 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-006T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Rather than long lines, 2001D-1DER-006T shows distortion of the letters themselves: the P, R and B of PLURIBUS are affected, and the ends of TES in STATES to a lesser degree. TrailDies estimates the offset at roughly 060°, east-northeast, toward the right and a little upward. Piece by piece, the number gives the year and Denver mint, a 1 meaning one cent, the reverse category DER, file 006 and the trail suffix T. Both sides are late on the stage C coin described: a gouge sits in front of Lincoln's nose, and a scratch runs through the fifth bay between the Memorial's columns. Jeremy Gardner reported the die. Distortion of this kind is normally credited to polishing of the die with a rotary tool; others suggest the die moved against the hub.
