2001 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-005T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Light trail lines spread across much of this reverse, all running to 050°, a little east of northeast, toward the upper right. The code 2001D-1DER-005T places it among TrailDies' 2001-D cent reverses (DER standing for design extension reverse) as file 005, and the closing T means trails rather than wavy steps. The lines start at the upper right corners of the motto's letters, and also leave the top of the left urn, the tops of the right-hand columns, the stylobate's right corners, the FG initials and the lower right of the T in CENT. The dies are both mid-life; the obverse shows upright scratches around the S of TRUST. Jeremy Gardner found this one. The cause usually named is a rotary buff used to polish the die, though a few writers think the die moving against the hub explains it better.
