2001 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-004T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Here the trails are moderate and crisp, rising off the upper left corners of the motto's letters at 320°, northwest, toward the upper left of the coin. As a TrailDies number, 2001D-1DER-004T means Denver, 2001, one cent, reverse design extension, file 004, with T for a trail die. It was paired in the press with an obverse trail die that TrailDies files as 2001D-1DEO-002T, so coins from this pair can carry trails on both sides. The obverse on the described coin is late, with a cluster of small gouges over the VDB initials and more about the date, while the reverse is early with nothing noted. Jeremy Gardner is named as the finder. Rotary polishing of the die is the cause most often given for trails; a smaller camp blames movement of the die against the hub.
