2001 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-003T Trail Die Reverse

Description

2001D-1DER-003T carries three separate sets of trail lines, and TrailDies says it was the first die found with more than two sets running different ways. Decoded, it is a 2001 Denver cent (2001D, 1) with a reverse design extension (DER), file 003, type T for trails. One set leaves the tops of the motto's letters at 050°, toward the upper right, or northeast. Another hangs below UNUM and the RIC of AMERICA at 350°, almost straight up. The third, on the scrollwork above the cornice and on UNI in UNITED, matches the 160° in the heading, south-southeast. The obverse is very late, with small gouges near the date and below IN; the reverse is early. Jeremy Gardner found it. Trails like these are generally traced to polishing of the die with a rotary buff, although some prefer the idea that the die moved against the hub.

Die Markers

• Stage “A”, obverse is VLDS – there is a series of small die gouges in and around the date. Another series of die gouges can be seen in the field below the word IN.
• Reverse is EDS – none noted.
