2001 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-002WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

On 2001D-1DER-002WS the stair effect is light and stays below the three central columns, 5 to 7. The code is built from the year, Denver's mint letter, a 1 for the cent, the reverse-side tag DER, file 002 and WS, short for wavy steps: trail lines over the Lincoln Memorial's steps that make the treads seem to ripple. The entry's heading puts the direction at 180°, straight down toward the bottom rim. Its middle-state coin has an obverse crack running between R and T in LIBERTY; on the reverse, a gouge tops the N in CENT and a dot sits inside the first U of UNUM. The entry credits the die to Richard Copper and the photographs to Richard Cooper. The customary explanation is rotary polishing of the die face, with movement of the die against the hub put forward by some as the alternative.
