Description
On 2001D-1DEO-002T, light trails come from the upper left corners of the BER in LIBERTY, running at 330°, toward the top left (north-northwest). Read in order, the number is 2001D for the Denver date; 1, the cent; DEO, an obverse extension of the design; 002, the file; and T, trails. TrailDies notes the coin is a late die state, so earlier strikes could show more lines. Its obverse has clusters of small gouges above the VDB initials and around the date. This obverse was paired with a reverse trail die, 2001D-1DER-004T, which is at an early state on the same coin. Jeremy Gardner found it. The usual explanation is rotary polishing of the die, though some favour the die having moved against the hub.
Die Markers
- Stage “A”, obverse is LDS- multiple small die gouges above the VDB. Multiple small die gouges in and around the date.
- Reverse is EDS – none noted.
