Description
Maryland's distinction as the seventh state to ratify the Constitution in 1788 earned it a place in the second year of the 50 State Quarters program, and this 2000-P Philadelphia Mint quarter carries a doubled die obverse cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2000-P 25¢ MD WDDO-001. The Maryland reverse features the dome of the Maryland Statehouse in Annapolis flanked by white oak leaf clusters and the state nickname. Doubled die obverse varieties on State Quarters affect the common obverse bearing John Flanagan's Washington portrait, where secondary hub impressions can manifest on lettering, date, or portrait elements shared across all fifty designs. The WDDO-001 designation indicates this was a doubled die obverse documented by the Wexler team for the 2000-P Maryland issue. As the second year of State Quarter production, 2000 saw public interest, and variety hunters gave these early issues intense scrutiny.
