Description

Discovered on the 2000 Philadelphia Mint Maryland State Quarter, this spiked head variety features a raised spike projecting from Washington's head — a die gouge or crack that transferred as a raised element onto struck coins. The "(MD)" suffix in the catalog number identifies the specific State Quarter design on which this variety appears, distinguishing it from spiked heads on other 2000 quarter reverses. An additional diagnostic feature is noted in the comments: a die crack extends from the rim to the base of the dome depicted on Maryland's reverse design, which shows the Maryland Statehouse dome in Annapolis. This secondary die crack adds attribution value by providing a reverse marker that supplements the obverse spike.
