Description

The 2000 (P) Maryland State Quarter represents a Philadelphia Mint issue from the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 678,200,000 Maryland quarters dated 2000. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. The reverse highlights the Maryland Statehouse dome in Annapolis, surrounded by white oak leaf clusters. The Statehouse is the oldest state capitol still in continuous legislative use and served as the nation's capital from 1783 to 1784. The 2000 quarters honored, in release order, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, and Virginia. The program drove an estimated 147 million Americans to collect quarters. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $5 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
