2000-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007
ErrorDescription
A partial extra column appearing in the fifth bay of the Lincoln Memorial on the reverse distinguishes this seventh documented doubled die reverse for the 2000 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent. Unlike doubled dies that manifest primarily as spread lettering or date numerals, this variety produces an architectural anomaly — an additional structural element within the Memorial building itself, visible as a ghostly extra column where the design normally shows open space. A small die gouge to the right of the lower Y in LIBERTY and another to the right of the lower S in TRUST serve as obverse die markers. On the reverse, a small die gouge to the left of the left Memorial base provides additional attribution confirmation. Cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID: 2000-D 1¢ WDDR-007, attributed by the Wexler Team. The Lincoln Memorial reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro and in production since 1959, features the twelve columns of the Memorial building in fine detail — a design element that proves remarkably sensitive to hub doubling because even slight misalignment can produce visible extra columns in the architectural spaces between bays. The 2000 Denver Mint struck billions of cents, employing hundreds of die pairs, and the seven-plus documented DDR varieties for this single date and mint reflect both the massive production scale and the architectural complexity of the Memorial design.
