Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as WDDR-005 on the 2000-D Lincoln Memorial Cent, this doubled die reverse manifests as extra columns visible in the 5th, 6th, and 7th Memorial bays — the spaces between the architectural columns of Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial design where phantom secondary column images appear as ghosted vertical lines. This extra-column effect is among the most visually accessible doubled die diagnostics on Memorial cents, as the strong vertical geometry of the building facade provides high-contrast reference lines against which any lateral displacement becomes immediately apparent. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge to the left of the upper I of IN, a small die gouge to the left of the lower G in GOD, and small die gouges below the last two zeros in the date. Reverse markers include a die gouge to the left of the lower O in OF and a small die gouge dot above the F in FG (the initials of designer Frank Gasparro). Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2000-D 1-cent WDDR-005 with estimated values of $25 in AU, $50 in MS60, $75 in MS63, and $100 in MS65RD, this variety carries documented market pricing that provides collectors with a value framework. The 2000-D Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Denver produced a substantial mintage for the year, generating a large working die population from which this WDDR-005 emerged. The concentration of extra columns in bays 5 through 7 indicates a directional spread that affected the right-center portion of the Memorial facade most strongly.
