Description

On the Lincoln Memorial reverse, twelve columns define the architectural facade, and this third doubled die reverse for the 2000-D cent targets column number seven — the column immediately right of center. Cataloged under VarietyVista identifiers UVC-3155 and DMR-004, the variety shows light spread rotated clockwise, manifesting as an extra partial column seven from the shin area down to the pedestal base. The clockwise rotation indicates the hub shifted rotationally between impressions during the die-making process, creating a second ghost image of the column displaced from its original position. Column doubling is among the most diagnostic features on Memorial reverse doubled dies because the vertical architectural lines provide sharp reference edges where even minor displacement becomes visible. The 2000-D was struck at the Denver Mint at the turn of the millennium, during the later years of Frank Gasparro's reverse design that would continue through 2008. Three DDR varieties for a single date and mint reflects the ongoing cataloging effort that tracks hubbing anomalies across the entire Memorial Cent series.
