Description

The 1999 (S) Proof Pennsylvania State Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The U.S. Mint produced 3.7 million examples, making this ranked 6th of 20 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order of statehood ratification. The reverse features the Commonwealth statue from atop the State Capitol dome, a keystone representing Pennsylvania's nickname "The Keystone State," and the state motto "Virtue Liberty Independence." These elements honor Pennsylvania's central role in the founding of the nation. Inaugural year featuring Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. The program instantly became the most successful numismatic initiative in U.S. history. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $45 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #96044.
