Description

The 1999 (D) Georgia State Quarter represents a Denver Mint issue from the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The Denver Mint struck 488,744,000 Georgia quarters dated 1999. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. The reverse features a peach at center framed by live oak sprigs, with an outline of the state and the motto "Wisdom Justice Moderation." The peach represents Georgia's nickname "The Peach State," while the live oak is the state tree. The program's first five quarters, issued in 1999, honored in release order Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. The program instantly became the most successful numismatic initiative in U.S. history. The Denver Mint, which grew from an 1860s gold rush assay office, has served as a major production facility since 1906.
