Description

The 1999 (S) Proof Delaware State Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The U.S. Mint produced 3.7 million examples, making this ranked 10th of 20 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order of statehood ratification. The reverse depicts Caesar Rodney on horseback during his legendary 80-mile ride to Philadelphia in 1776, where his tie-breaking vote secured Delaware's support for American independence. As the first state to ratify the Constitution, Delaware's quarter launched the entire 50 State Quarters Program. Inaugural year featuring Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. The program instantly became the most successful numismatic initiative in U.S. history. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $45 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #96042.
