Description

The 1999 (S) Proof Connecticut State Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 3,713,359 proof Connecticut quarters dated 1999. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. The reverse depicts the legendary Charter Oak, the ancient white oak tree where Connecticut patriots hid their 1662 royal charter in 1687 to prevent its seizure by British royal governor Sir Edmund Andros. The tree symbolizes Connecticut's fierce determination to preserve self-governance. The program's first five quarters, issued in 1999, honored in release order Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. The program instantly became the most successful numismatic initiative in U.S. history. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $45 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #913005.
