Description

Struck at the Denver Mint during the inaugural year of the 50 State Quarters program, this WDDO-002 variety appears on the 1999-D Georgia State Quarter. Georgia was the fourth state quarter released in 1999, joining Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Connecticut in the first year of a program that would transform American coin collecting by drawing millions of new participants. The Georgia reverse, designed by T. James Ferrell, depicts a peach with the state outline, the state motto "Wisdom, Justice, Moderation," on a banner, and sprigs of live oak. Doubled die obverse varieties on state quarters affect the shared obverse design featuring George Washington's portrait, making them collectible across the entire 50-state series. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1999-D 25c GA WDDO-002. Die varieties from the first year of the state quarter program hold particular interest for specialists, as the Mint was adapting its production processes to accommodate the schedule of five new reverse designs per year.
