CU-25c-1999D-01(GA) Rim Cud

Description

First documented rim cud on the 1999-D Georgia State Quarter — issued during the inaugural year of the 50 State Quarters program, which launched in January 1999 and would become one of the most popular coin collecting phenomena in American numismatic history. Georgia was among the first five states honored that year, alongside Delaware, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, in the order each ratified the Constitution. The Georgia reverse features a peach, the state outline, a banner reading "Wisdom, Justice, Moderation," and live oak branches. A rim cud results from the complete separation of a die fragment at the rim, producing a raised, featureless mass where metal fills the void during striking. Denver Mint production of the 1999 State Quarters ran into the hundreds of millions across the five designs, consuming large numbers of die pairs. Cuds on first-year State Quarters hold particular interest for collectors who pursue the program by date and variety, since they combine the appeal of a die error with the novelty of a design that was in production for only a few months.
