Description

Found by Michael Pope of Illinois, this Trail Dies-cataloged Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent displays trail lines from the left side letters in EPU, the ED of UNITED, and the ST of STATES at an offset direction of 330 degrees. The wide distribution of trail lines across multiple inscription groups indicates substantial partial die contact. Die markers at Stage B: obverse at MDS with die gouges seen immediately below and below the mintmark; reverse at MDS with a small die gouge in the O of ONE and a die gouge to the right of the first block on the left base line of the Memorial building. The obverse die gouges flanking the mintmark provide distinctive attribution markers. Struck in copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1998-D Memorial Cent was produced at Denver as Gasparro's reverse design was approaching its fortieth year of continuous service.
