1998 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-002T Trail Die Reverse

Description

TrailDies lists 1998D-1DER-002T under 300° in its heading but gives the offset direction as 330° in the text; both lie to the upper left, west-northwest and north-northwest. The lines come from the letters on the left side of the motto, ED in UNITED and ST in STATES. In the code, 1998D carries the date and the Denver mint, the 1 the cent, DER the extended reverse, 002 the file and T the trail type. The middle-die-state coin has gouges just below the mint mark; the reverse shows a small gouge inside the O of ONE and another just right of the first block of the left base line. Michael Pope of Illinois found it. Most specialists put trails down to the die being polished with a rotary buff, though a minority think the die moved against the hub.

• Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – die gouges are seen immediately below and below the mint mark
• Reverse is MDS – a small die gouge is seen in the O of ONE. A die gouge is seen to the right of the first block on the left base line of the Memorial building.
