1998 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-001WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Both effects are faint on 1998D-1DER-001WS: a light fluting extension into the stylobate below column 3, and only a very light bend in the steps under columns 5, 6 and 7. TrailDies' number reads as the 1998 Denver cent, then DER, which it uses when the design extends on the reverse, file 001 and WS for wavy steps, the trail form in which the Memorial's stairs appear to ripple. The offset is 180°, south. Its middle-die-state coin has two gouges below the collar edge on the obverse and, on the reverse, cracks under the crossbar of the A in STATES and on the right of the second T. Richard Cooper of Arizona found the die. Polishing of the die with a rotary buff is the explanation most specialists give for wavy steps, though some think the die moved against the hub.
