1998 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DEO-002T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Light trail lines run from the top left of each letter of LIBERTY on 1998D-1DEO-002T, pointing north-northwest at 330°. TrailDies' code is built from the 1998 date, D for Denver, 1 for the cent, DEO for the obverse design extension, file number 002, and T, which marks trails. The coin it records is an early die state (stage A), with nothing noted on the obverse and two tiny die dots flanking the T of CENT on the reverse. That pair of dots helps separate it from the Denver obverse filed as 001, which has the same 330° direction. Bill Slaughter of Arkansas found the die. Die polishing with a rotary wheel is the generally accepted cause, while some see the die moving against the hub as the source.
