1998 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse
Error
Description
This is an obverse trail die: on 1998D-1DEO-001T, light lines leave the upper left corners of the I, B, E and R of LIBERTY at 330°, toward the upper left, or north-northwest. The number gives the date and Denver mint (1998D), 1 for the cent, DEO for design extension on the obverse, file 001 and T for trails. TrailDies' coin is late in the die's life, with no obverse markers; on its reverse, look for a dot above the N of ONE and another beneath the U of UNITED, toward its right side. The common answer to what causes trails is rotary polishing of the die; a less common one is the die moving against the hub.
