Found by Louis Schaeffer and cataloged by Trail Dies, the 1996D-25DEO-001T represents the first documented trail die obverse on the 1996 Denver Mint Washington Quarter. Trail dies produce faint, ghost-like traces of the design displaced from its normal position, typically appearing as thin raised lines that parallel the primary design elements in a consistent directional offset. On Washington Quarters, the trail die effect manifests on the familiar John Flanagan obverse portrait that had been in continuous use since 1932, and the displaced traces can appear on lettering, the portrait itself, or both depending on the specific characteristics of the die anomaly.
