Description

TrailDies calls 1995P-1DER-022T unusual even for a trail die, because its upper and lower lettering look so different. The tops of E PLURIBUS UNUM and of OF rise in sloping, ramp-like extensions with faint trails; STATES has short, heavy lines on its E and on both Ts; and a light line leaves the foot of its final S. Those upper letters look thick and blurred, while ONE stays sharp. All the lines point at 350°, just west of north. In the code, the cent's 1 and the DER group (design extension, reverse) follow the date and mint, and 022T gives file and type, T for trails. At the middle die state described, a crack crosses both 9s of the date and continues into the field, and a gouge sits between the U and N of UNITED. The accepted account puts trails down to rotary polishing of the die; an alternative view credits the die moving against the hub.
