Description
A BIE die chip is visible on this 1995 Lincoln Memorial cent. A BIE die chip is typically a specific type of die chip that appears as a raised vertical line between the letters “B” and “E” in “LIBERTY,” resembling the letter “I” and creating what appears to read “LIBIERTY;” however, die chips in other locations of Liberty are also commonly referred to as BIE die chips. In this case, the die chip is between the “I” and the “B” making “LIIBERTY.” This occurs when a small piece of the die surface between these letters breaks away, leaving a void that fills with metal during striking. BIE die chips are among the most popular and widely collected die chip varieties on Lincoln cents.
