TrailDies numbers this die 1995P-1DER-021WS, file 021 in its run of 1995 Philadelphia cent reverses; the 1 is the cent, DER the reverse design extension heading and WS the step type. Wavy steps are trails that run across the Memorial's stairs, so the treads look bent rather than straight. Here the bend is light, from column 5 across to column 8, heavier on the left, and a light fluting line from column 3 drops into the stylobate. The direction is 180°, down the coin. To pin it down, look for a long, narrow gouge at the lower left of the I in IN on the obverse and a short, heavy scratch in bay 7 on the reverse, both at a middle die state. The cause most often cited is polishing of the die with a rotary buff; some specialists cite movement of the die against the hub.
