1995 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DEO-004T Trail Die Obverse

Description

TrailDies calls 1995P-1DEO-004T an unusual trail die, with an offset direction of 030°, north-northeast. Faint trails sit at the upper right corners of IN. Most of the effect is thickening: the top bar of the E in WE and the top strokes of both Ts, the R and the S in TRUST are heavily thickened, and the W of WE is thickened too, with an added bar TrailDies is unsure about. The way the two upper tips of the U in TRUST spread apart hints at the direction. Decoded, the number is 1995, Philadelphia, cent (1), obverse design extension (DEO), file 004, trails (T). At stage B there is a gouge under the T of LIBERTY, and a long reverse crack climbs from column 8 through the roof, UNUM, PLURIBUS and STATES to the rim. The common view is that trails come from rotary polishing of the die; a smaller group links them to the die moving against the hub.

• Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – die gouge under the T of LIBERTY.
• Reverse is MDS – large die crack from the top of column 8, through the cornice and roof, up through the M of UNUM and the I of PLURIBUS, through the last S of STATES and into the rim.
