Error
Description
TrailDies records 1994P-1DER-001WST as the first wavy-step die ever reported, attributed by John Wexler in 1995 and again by Ken Potter in 2000. Its number stands for a 1994 Philadelphia cent (1994P, 1), reverse design extension (DER), file 001, with WST for wavy steps plus trails. The stairs under columns 4 through 8 bend strongly, with several lines in each. Fluting carries into the stylobate moderately under columns 2 and 3 and strongly, in multiple lines, under columns 10, 11 and 12, and lines also leave the building's corners, the FG initials and the blocks beneath the right-hand shrubs. All run south at 180°. Middle and late die-state coins look much the same. Trails are usually attributed to polishing of the die with a rotary tool, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
