Description

Trails on 1994P-1DEO-013T come from the 4 in the date and run at 120°, east-southeast, down and to the right. The number: 1994 and P for Philadelphia, 1 for the cent, DEO for design extension obverse, file 013, T for trails. TrailDies suggests these lines may have been strengthened by flow of the metal across the die. Both sides of the coin it describes are late in the die's life, and no markers are listed for either. With only one digit affected, the trails from the 4 are the thing to look for. John Rosenberg found the die. The common explanation is rotary polishing of the die face; a smaller camp attributes the lines to movement between die and hub.
