Description

Cataloged as the thirteenth and final obverse trail die documented for the 1994 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, 1994P-1DEO-013T was found by John Rosenberg. Trail die obverse varieties occur when a misaligned or tilted obverse die imparts unintended directional flow lines on the portrait side of the coin, and this example represents the last known obverse die to exhibit the phenomenon for the 1994-P date. Both the obverse and reverse dies reached late die state (LDS), though no specific die markers were noted on either die. The LDS classification on both sides indicates this die pair had endured extensive service before the trail die characteristics were identified, consistent with a die nearing the end of its productive life. Among the thirteen cataloged 1994-P obverse trail dies, 013T closes the census — a figure that reflects the enormous volume of dies employed at the Philadelphia Mint for a date that produced billions of Lincoln cents.
