1994 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DEO-002T Trail Die Obverse

Description

On 1994P-1DEO-002T, light trails leave the tops of BERTY in LIBERTY at 290°, west-northwest, pointing up and to the left. The code breaks down as a 1994 Philadelphia one-cent piece (1994P, 1), design extension obverse (DEO), file 002, trails (T). TrailDies draws attention to a saw-tooth edge on the uprights of the B, E and R: where a letter's crossbar meets its upright, that right-angled corner is dragged across the letter and leaves a jagged outline, a look it calls typical of trail dies. Its coin is a late one (stage C), with die scratches of moderate to heavy strength crossing LIBERTY and the date, and a crack at the foot of column 3 on the reverse. The common explanation is rotary polishing of the die face; a smaller camp attributes the lines to movement between die and hub.
