1989D-1DER-005T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Classified with the T (Tilted) suffix rather than WS, the 1989D-1DER-005T trail die reverse represents a different category of hubbing anomaly — one where the trail impression results from a tilted hub-to-die contact rather than the wide spread that characterizes WS varieties. This specimen shows a simple trail die pattern consisting of two trail lines extending from the left top corners of the E and R in AMERICA, plus one crossover trail line originating from the middle arm of the E. The trail offset is measured at 330 degrees, placing the secondary impression in the upper-left quadrant relative to the primary design. Classified at Stage A in early die state (EDS), this die was documented near the beginning of its production life, when trail features are at their sharpest before progressive die wear begins to soften them. No notable supplementary die markers have been recorded on either surface, making the trail lines themselves the primary attribution feature. The early die state designation means specimens struck from this die should show crisp, well-defined trail lines that have not yet been diminished by the mechanical stress of repeated striking. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
