Struck approximately 55% off center to the west, this 1989 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent preserves the full date and Lincoln's portrait on the obverse while nearly half the design is absent, replaced by a blank crescent of unstruck planchet. Off-center strikes occur when a planchet fails to seat properly between the dies, shifting the point of impact. The severity here — over half the planchet missed — places it well beyond minor misalignment territory. Retaining a full, legible date at this percentage is relatively uncommon, since greater off-center displacement increases the likelihood of obliterating the date entirely. The reverse shows the Memorial design truncated near the midpoint. Modern Lincoln cents from the late 1980s have enormous mintages, but dramatic striking errors transform an ordinary issue into a collectible. Error collectors grade off-center strikes on eye appeal, percentage off center, and date visibility rather than traditional Mint State criteria.
