1989D-1DER-004WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Also discovered by Steven Bingham of Missouri — making this the second WS trail die variety attributed to the same researcher — the 1989D-1DER-004WS reverse shares the same column range as 003WS, showing moderate step deviation under columns 5 through 9 of the Lincoln Memorial. Despite the identical column span and the same discoverer, the two varieties originate from different working dies, as confirmed by their distinct die marker profiles and die state classifications. Like 003WS, this variety is classified at Stage C in late die state (LDS), and the reverse also carries two small die gouges between the A and T of STATES. The parallel characteristics between these two varieties — same column range, same stage, same discoverer, same general marker location — suggest Bingham may have identified them during a systematic search through rolls or bags of 1989-D cents, encountering two different dies that happened to produce similar trail impressions across the same architectural zone of the Memorial reverse. The subtle differences in gouge placement, die crack patterns, and overall surface condition distinguish these as independent die products. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
