1989 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-004WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

For 1989D-1DER-004WS, TrailDies records the same picture as its file 003 except for the direction: moderate wavy steps under columns 5 to 9, but offset here at 190°, a few degrees west of due south. Wavy steps are trails that cross the Memorial's stairs and make them appear to buckle. The number gives the 1989 date with Denver's D, the denomination 1, DER for a reverse design extension, file 004 and WS. Both entries name Steven Bingham of Missouri as finder and list the same late-state marker, a pair of small gouges in the gap between the A and T of STATES, with nothing on the obverse. Trails are generally believed to come from polishing of the die with a rotary buff, while some believe the die moved against the hub.
