1989 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-003WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

1989D-1DER-003WS is a Denver cent reverse of 1989 with moderate wavy steps under the five columns from 5 to 9: lines run down across the stairs there and give them a bent look. They head due south, 180°. In the code, 1989D is date and mint, 1 the cent, DER the reverse design extension, 003 the file and WS the wavy steps. Steven Bingham of Missouri found it. The late-state coin TrailDies describes has nothing marked on the obverse; on the reverse, two small gouges lie between the A and T of STATES. TrailDies gives the same description and markers for file 004, which differs only in its 190° direction. Rotary polishing of the die is the explanation most give for trails, though some say the die moved against the hub.
